How Much Thanks Can You Put in Your Thanksgiving?

On Sunday, November 23, we will be asking how much 'thanks' we will have in our Thanksgiving, and exploring the extensive benefits which can result from living in a state of gratitude.

The Oxford English Dictionary describes gratitude as: "the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness."

The Buddhist Monk Thich Nhat Hanh advised us that gratitude is a state of being. It is not just a fleeting feeling but a way of life that brings peace, joy and resilience. Hmmm...a 'way of life.' Does that sound too difficult to take on? I assure you, it is not and it is well worth the investment of the conscious decision to begin or expand our gratitude quotient.

We all learned as children to say, "please" and "thank you." How well we applied that thought is as individual as we are. I have always been a serious "please and thank you" type of person, even as a child. I guess from initial parental advisement, it always seemed to me to be the polite thing to do. However, through many years of studying our spiritual philosophy of Religious Science, in addition to Unity, Shin Buddhism, Ho'oponopono, and other philosophies, I have learned the depth of the value of true and regular gratitude. Even Ernest Holmes, our Founder and the author of our text, "The Science of Mind," included gratitude/thanksgiving as one of the five steps of Spiritual Mind Treatment (our process of affirmative prayer). Gratitude makes a positive difference in energy, in heart and mind, in experience, in relationships. Further, studies show the vast physical, mental, emotional, social and relational benefits of a regular practice of gratitude! It is like a magic key that can positively impact every aspect of our lives.

Do join us this Sunday as we explore the impact of an Attitude of Gratitude and prepare to enjoy a lovely Thanksgiving Day with friends and family. AND as a sneak preview, join us after the service for a traditional Thanksgiving meal right here at the Center in our fellowship hall. There have been sign-up sheets for side dishes; and please do feel free to bring one of your own favorites to share if you are so inclined (not required). Look forward to seeing you then!

In love and gratitude,

Rev. Helen Downey 🥰
