There is No One Alive Who is Youer than You

"Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You." Dr. Seuss

It’s been a few weeks now that I’ve been writing this weekly column, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed doing so. But this morning, I felt a bit overwhelmed with everything I feel I have to and want to do, and so I thought of simply sharing a Mary Oliver poem. But then I thought of another great metaphysical poet, Dr. Seuss and one of my favorite books by him, Oh, The Places You’ll Go. I went to my bookcase so I could read it after journaling and meditating. Before I opened it, however, I thought of this “Youer than You” quote, and how my “Youer than You” was feeling a bit tired and wanted to cancel today’s meetings and appointments. I thought of how me being true to myself means not just accepting myself as I am right now, but honoring myself so that if I do feel as though I really could use a day of rest, giving myself that space and time. And, it also means celebrating my “Youer than You” self.

Although I worked all of my career in entertainment, it wasn’t often that I felt a deep connection the TV shows and films that our clients created. But there was one that I felt genuinely connected to, albeit those few people who did see it gave it negative reviews. That was Cloud Atlas. Wikipedia synopsizes it as a “story [that] jumps between eras, spanning hundreds of years, until each storyline eventually resolves…Characters in prior storylines are found in future storylines, [and as they] recur in each era… [they] change relationships to each other, suggesting … connection between souls through the ages.”

As a metaphysician, I understand that we’re not just who we are in this present moment, but that we’re a collection of eternal present moments in infinite variety of form and shape. Knowing we are one with each other on the unseen side of life, why wouldn’t we be in one another’s storylines and in changing relationships? For we’re all lights of the Infinite Eternal Prism of Life, or what I call God. As individualized expressions of God, each one of us shines our own light in unique ways and means even though we are all one with and of this One Prism of Life.

A few days before the film’s premiere, Lana Wachowski, one of the film’s creators, gave an acceptance speech for the Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award and shared:

“So I’m at my hairdresser’s… I say yeah, the HRC wants to give me an award. Award for what? [He asks.] I say, ‘I guess for kind of being myself.’… And he’s like, ‘Yeah, I guess you make a pretty good you.’ And I was like, yeah, ‘Yeah, well there wasn’t a lot of competition.’”

There isn’t any competition – or comparison -- to us being our “Youer than You” selves. So, I’m inviting to join me in not only accepting and honoring yourself for who you are right now, but also celebrating You here and now. Yes, give yourself your own award for being “Youer than You!” Write your acceptance speech, detailing how you’re so Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious the best You ever! And then say your speech out loud, to Yourself, in the mirror and finish with a standing ovation for You! Bravo!!
